Using the inverse trigonometric functions and trigonometric identities, solve the following for $x$ in terms of $y$:

As you most likely know, there are an *abundance* of interesting and relevant formulas and identities surrounding the trigonometric functions. In this post I will be solving the three general trigonometric equations posed at the beginning using some of these identities, and then I will be showing how to extend some of them

First are the translation identities:

Then the pythagorean identities:

Then the half-angle formulas:

Then, finally, the sum-angle formulas:

I will not list the difference-angle and double-angle formulas, since they can be easily derived from the sum-angle formulas.

First, I will tackle the first two of the problems listed at the beginning of the post. The first two are not very difficult, but the third one had me stumped for quite some time. If we want to solve for $x$ in terms of $y$, we need only make use of the pythagorean identities. If we rearrange this to form Then we can use the first pythagorean identity to convert this into an equation with only one trigonometric function: and now we can readily invert it:

Now it's time for the second one: We will again use the pythagorean identity, but in a different way. This time, we will use the fact that since then and so, by substitution, our original equation can be turned into And we have just reduced it to a quadratic, which can be solved using the quadratic formula:

Now for the third equation: Though it seems much simpler than the other two, this one is actually much more difficult. It, too, involves a "trick" and a trigonometric identity, but it does not use the pythagorean identity. Before I give it away, you should try this problem - once you discover the trick, the result can be very satisfying.

To solve this, you must convert the equation into this equivalent equation: Now we will need to use another identity - one that I did not mention at the beginning of the post: which means that And so we can again transform our equation into the equivalent equation Now recall the sum-angle formula And so, finally, we can convert our equation into and, at last, And that concludes our set of three trigonometric equations to solve.

Now I would like to turn to the subject of identities surrounding the inverse trigonometric functions. For most of the identities applying to the sine, cosine, and tangent functions, there are analogous identities regarding their partial inverses. For example, we have the pythagorean identity which we can rearrange to get Now we will implement the trick that we will use to derive many of our inverse trigonometric identities. Let Then we can solve for $\theta$ in terms of $\phi$: However, if we use $1-\cos^2\theta$ instead of $\sin^2\theta$, we end up with and so, transitively,

There are many more identities like this. I will not derive any more of them, though, since they can all be derived in the same way. Here is a list of all that I have derived, so that you may try a few for yourself:

The final three identities that I will reveal regarding the inverse trigonometric functions involve sums of inverse trigonometric functions. First is This formula is easily derived. Simply convert the expression into and then use the sum-angle formula: and so

Be warned - because of the imperfect nature of the inverse trigonometric functions, this identity is sometimes faulty.

I will not derive the last two sum identities - you may try them, if you like, but their derivations are almost exactly the same.
